    Almighty God, as I begin this day, I am reminded of Your extraordinary faithfulness, a truth etched in Your covenant love that spans generations. You are God, sovereign and true, and in Your steadfastness I find my security. Thank You for Your promises, which are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. Help me to live today with a profound awareness of Your presence and Your unchanging character. May my actions and my thoughts honour Your name, reflecting the deep trust that Your love inspires within me. Grant me wisdom to discern Your will and courage to follow Your path, knowing that You are with me, guiding my every step. I pray that the ‘red’ colour of this feast day, symbolising the fervent love and passion for Christ, would ignite in me a similar devotion as I follow Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Help me to resist the temptation of ‘selfish pursuit of gain’ and the ‘possessive love of riches’ that the collect for Saint Matthew calls us to forsake. Instead, may I find my true treasure in following Jesus, Your Son. Empower me by Your Spirit to be faithful in my responsibilities, compassionate in my interactions, and resolute in my commitment to You. Remind me that Your love is not conditional on my performance but is a gift I can receive and live by. Fill me with Your peace, that I may navigate the rest of this day with grace and purpose. Amen.

Thank You for the example of Saint Matthew, who responded to Your call with a transformed life, forsaking earthly riches for the immeasurable treasure of following Jesus. Tonight, I commit my anxieties and my hopes to Your sovereign care. Help me to release any residue of ‘selfish pursuit of gain’ or a ‘possessive love of riches’ that may have lingered. I pray for restful sleep, knowing that You never slumber nor sleep.     The foundational truth declared in Deuteronomy 7:9 is the absolute sovereignty and unique identity of the Lord as God. ‘Know therefore that the Lord your God is God’. This isn’t merely an assertion but an imperative, a call to profound understanding and recognition. In the context of ancient Israel, surrounded by nations worshipping a pantheon of capricious and often morally corrupt deities, this statement was a radical declaration of monotheism. The Lord, the God of Israel, was not just a god, but the God, the supreme, all-powerful, and true deity. This knowledge was not to be abstract but foundational to their identity and their lives, especially as they were poised to enter the Promised Land. It meant that all other claims to divinity were false, and all their hopes and fears should be directed towards this one true God.

    Following this declaration is the assurance of His character: ‘he is the faithful God’. Faithfulness (Hebrew: ’emunah’) speaks of reliability, steadfastness, and truthfulness. It’s the bedrock of trust. In an era where alliances could be broken and promises forgotten, God’s faithfulness stood in stark contrast. This faithfulness is not arbitrary; it is intrinsically linked to His covenant relationship with His people. ‘keeping his covenant of love’. The Hebrew word for love here (chesed) is rich in meaning, often translated as steadfast love, loving-kindness, or mercy. It signifies a loyal, covenantal love that goes beyond mere emotion, expressing itself in action and commitment. This love is the active outworking of His faithfulness, a promise of enduring grace and protection.

    The extent of this covenantal love is astonishing: ‘to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments’. A thousand generations is a poetic and hyperbole expression signifying an incredibly vast span of time, far beyond human comprehension or any earthly dynasty. Human relationships fracture, political promises evaporate, and economic systems are prone to collapse. We are constantly bombarded with messages that foster doubt and insecurity. In such an environment, Deuteronomy 7:9 rings out as a beacon of eternal hope. It calls us to recognise that the ultimate reality is not the transient failures of humanity but the unchanging character of God. Our security does not rest on our own transient efforts or the shifting sands of worldly circumstances, but on the immutable faithfulness of our Creator and Redeemer. We are called to ‘know’ this truth, not just intellectually, but experientially. This means deliberately choosing to trust God’s promises over our anxieties, to anchor our hope in His enduring love even when we feel unloved or overlooked, and to respond with our own growing love and obedience, recognizing that this response is enabled by His Spirit within us. The feast of Saint Matthew, on this day, calls us to consider this very transformation – from a life centred on selfish gain to one devoted to following Christ. Matthew’s call echoes this passage; God’s faithfulness reached out to him, and his response, enabled by grace, was to love and follow. This same invitation and promise extend to us.

    Trust in God

    This week I went to the dentist and it occurred to me when I was going that we place a certain amount of trust in those who care for us whenever we visit, we become vulnerable, but we often only place that trust in them when we are there.

    Whereas, as Children of God, we place our trust in the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost every minute and every second of every day; so too must we become vulnerable to open ourselves up for His place in our lives. The trust we place in Him is far greater than any trust we place in individuals and I know I have fallen short of that at times.

    I often need to remind myself that it is I, and not God, that is the source of any fear and doubt when I lack trust and that I must do my best to repay His trust in me because His trust never falters.  It will never vanish off the face of this earth and it is an eternal trust we receive, a parental trust and something so far greater than anything anyone could possibly return.  But return it we do, whenever and wherever we can, in prayer, in honesty, in who we are, for it is in and through Jesus that we find our salvation, by being like him, by learning from him, in seeing Him in ourselves and in each other, in loving God our Father and in loving our neighbour as we do ourselves.

    This weekend we will hear and read about the events that took place in and around Jerusalem so many years ago.  Jesus placed all of his trust in his Father, in our Father.  Even when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus was at his most vulnerable his trust in his Father remained steadfast, and his resolve to complete the most glorious gift we can ever receive remained strong, and he completed it through faith, through trust, and through love.
