  • God Sees and Remembers: The Enduring Value of Faithful Service

We’ve all been there. Pouring our energy into serving others, into our work for the Lord, only to feel as though our efforts go unnoticed or unappreciated. It’s easy to question whether our sacrifices matter in the grand scheme of things, especially when weariness sets in or recognition is scarce. But what if the ultimate audience for our service is not the people we serve, but the One who sees all and remembers all?

The author of Hebrews offers a powerful reminder that our dedication is not in vain. In a passage that addresses spiritual maturity and perseverance, a profound truth is woven in: God is intimately aware of our faithfulness and His justice ensures that our love and labour will be remembered.

God’s Perfect Memory is Our Assurance

The heart of the message lies in the assurance from Hebrews 6:10 (NIV): “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” This is not about earning favour through deeds, but about the Father’s faithful acknowledgment of a genuine heart committed to Him. It speaks to a divine justice that perfectly registers every act of selfless service and every outpouring of love directed towards His people. In a world that often overlooks humble contributions, this verse highlights that our heavenly Father’s perspective is eternal, His justice is perfect, and His memory is unfailing.

Your Work and Love Are Not In Vain

It can be tempting to measure our impact by visible results or the applause of others. However, the writer of Hebrews encourages a shift in perspective. The work mentioned isn’t just grand gestures, but the diligent, ongoing efforts of living out our faith. Coupled with this is the love you have shown him, which is deeply intertwined with how we love and serve fellow believers. This practical expression of love is a direct testament to our devotion to God. The emphasis on continue to help them underscores the value God places on perseverance. He doesn’t just see the initial effort, but the sustained commitment, the ongoing labour of love that characterises a life lived for Him.

    A Counter-Narrative to Discouragement

In the original context, the recipients of this letter were likely facing trials, perhaps even persecution. The author’s aim was to bolster their resolve and remind them of God’s unwavering faithfulness. For us today, this passage serves as a potent antidote to discouragement. When our contributions feel small, or when we face apathy or resistance, we are reminded that God’s gaze is upon the heart and the consistent, faithful actions that flow from it. This truth empowers us to serve with greater generosity and tenacity, knowing that our efforts, however unseen by human eyes, are eternally significant in God’s sight.

    Living with Eternal Perspective

The encouragement from Hebrews 6:10 calls us to view our daily tasks, our service within the church community, and our support for fellow believers not as burdens, but as precious opportunities to express our love for God. It challenges us to live lives that are not only marked by salvation through grace but are also characterised by a tangible, enduring love for God and His church. This understanding fosters a motivation that transcends the need for earthly recognition, anchoring our service in the deep assurance of divine approval and the anticipation of His just and loving response.

It’s a profound comfort to know that our Heavenly Father actively remembers our work and our love for Him and His people. This truth invites us to press on with joy, knowing that every act of kindness, every moment of patience, every sacrifice made in love, is registered in the divine ledger and will be met with His just and loving acknowledgment.

How does this assurance impact your perspective on service, particularly during challenging times?

  • A prayer for doing good to all people, especially believers 2026-10-11

Lord, as I reflect on your word today, you call me to action: "As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." This is a simple yet profound instruction. It’s easy to read these words and feel a sense of agreement, but harder to translate them into tangible deeds.

My heart often feels a desire to help, to be generous, to love my neighbour. But then life gets busy, my own concerns take centre stage, and opportunities to do good slip by unnoticed or unseized. Sometimes, fear or doubt creeps in – fear of failure, fear of being taken advantage of, doubt about whether my small efforts even make a difference.

Today, I want to lay those fears and doubts before you. Help me, Lord, to be more aware of the opportunities you place before me each day. Open my eyes to see the needs around me, not just the obvious ones, but the quiet struggles, the unspoken hurts, the chances to offer a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or a practical helping hand.

You have placed me within your family of believers, and your word specifically highlights that we should have a special care for one another. Lord, help me to be a supportive and loving member of your church. May I contribute to the building up of your body, offering grace and support to my brothers and sisters in Christ, celebrating their joys and bearing their burdens.

But your call extends beyond the church walls. "To all people." Help me to extend your love and goodness to everyone I encounter, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances. May my actions be a reflection of your own boundless love and generosity, seeking to bless and serve others without expectation of return.

Lord, help me to overcome my inertia, my selfishness, my anxieties. Give me the courage and wisdom to act when opportunities arise, to speak words that build up, and to offer comfort and practical help. May my life be a testament to your grace, marked by a consistent desire to do good, in whatever way I can, for your glory.

Lord, help me to be a doer of your word, not just a hearer. Amen.
