  • A prayer for God daily bearing our burdens 2026-10-18

Lord, my God, my Saviour, thank you. Thank you for being God, for being my God, and for being my constant saviour. Your word today reminds me that you “daily bear our burdens.” What a profound truth to anchor my soul. I confess that sometimes I feel the weight of the world, the worries of my own life, and the concerns for others pressing down on me. There are days when the burdens feel too heavy to carry, and I am tempted to feel overwhelmed or alone.

But then I remember your promise. You, in your infinite love and power, daily bear my burdens. Not just some burdens, or the big burdens, or the burdens I choose to give you, but all of them, every single day. This isn’t a one-off rescue, but a continuous act of love and strength.

Lord, help me to truly grasp this. Help me to release the worries I cling to, the anxieties that steal my peace, and the fears that paralyse me. Teach me to bring each new day, and each new burden, to you, knowing that you welcome them. Help me to trust that as you carry them, I am freed to walk with a lighter step, with more joy and less strain.

Lord, help me to truly understand what it means to have you bear my burdens. May this truth permeate my being, transforming my perspective and deepening my reliance on you. Help me to cast all my anxieties on you, because you care for me.

Thank you for your strength, your grace, and your unwavering presence. Amen.

  • A prayer for God's daily support and the Church's faithful mission 2026-10-18

Almighty God, our Saviour and our strength, you daily bear our burdens and uphold us in our weakness. We pray for your Church throughout the world, that strengthened by your grace, we may faithfully carry the loads entrusted to us, and proclaim your love to all. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • A prayer for God's constant support and salvation 2026-10-18

Loving God, as we gather in your presence, we thank you for the gift of this day and for the assurance that you are our constant Saviour. You are the God who daily bears our burdens, and we come before you now to offer our prayers, confident in your unwavering love and strength. Open our hearts and minds to your will, that our intercessions may reflect your boundless compassion and mercy.

Lord, we pray for your Church throughout the world, especially for the Festival of Luke the Evangelist. We give thanks for the dedication of Saint Luke, who so carefully recorded the life and teachings of your Son, and for his ministry as both evangelist and physician of the soul. We pray that your Church may always be empowered by your Spirit to proclaim the Gospel with love and to offer healing to all who are brokenhearted. We pray for all those who dedicate their lives to spreading your word and caring for your people, that they may know your strength and guidance in their ministry.

Gracious God, creator of all that is, we thank you for the beauty and bounty of your creation. We pray for a renewed commitment to stewardship of this earth, that we may be wise and caring guardians of your world for future generations. We lift up to you our nation and all nations, and those in authority. Grant them wisdom, justice, and compassion in their decisions, that they may work for the good of all people, fostering peace and understanding. We pray for an end to conflict and for reconciliation where there is division.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our own community and parish. Bless all who live and work here. We pray for our schools, our local businesses, and our public services. Strengthen the bonds of fellowship among us, and inspire us to reach out with love and support to our neighbours. We pray for those who feel isolated or in need, that they may know they are seen and cared for.

Lord, you are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. We bring before you all who are suffering in body, mind, or spirit. We pray for those who are ill, those who are grieving, and those who are struggling with anxiety or despair. We remember all those on our parish prayer list: [Insert names here, or pause for silent reflection] We ask for your healing touch upon them, for comfort, peace, and hope. Grant strength and perseverance to those who care for them, and may they know your presence in their darkest hours.

Eternal God, in whose presence we live, we commend to your care all those who have died. We give thanks for their lives and for the love they shared with us. We pray that they may rest in peace and rise in glory, knowing the fullness of your eternal love.

Sovereign Lord, you daily bear our burdens and fulfil the desires of those who fear you. We thank you for hearing our prayers and for your unfailing love. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

  • A prayer for Trust and Confidence in God 2026-10-13

Loving God, as we gather in your presence, we reflect on the wisdom and hope found in your word. You are our rock and our refuge, the source of our strength and our peace. As we bring our prayers before you, help us to trust fully in you, knowing that in you alone we find true blessing and enduring hope.

We pray for the Church throughout the world, and especially for our own parish. We ask that we may always place our confidence in you, Lord, and not in fleeting worldly powers or human wisdom. Strengthen our faith, deepen our trust, and enable us to be witnesses to your unfailing love and faithfulness in all that we do.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for our nation and all nations, for our leaders and those in positions of authority. May they govern with justice, wisdom, and a deep sense of responsibility, always seeking the common good. We pray for all who are striving for peace and reconciliation in a troubled world, that their efforts may be blessed and bear fruit. We also pray for our planet, that we may be wise stewards of your creation, cherishing and protecting its delicate balance.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for our local community, for all who live and work here. Bless our homes, our schools, and our businesses. We pray for those who are working to build up and support our community, that their efforts may be fruitful. May we, as a parish, be a visible sign of your love and compassion, reaching out to all those in need.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We hold before you, O Lord, all those who are suffering in any way: those who are ill in body or mind, those who are lonely or afraid, those who are in distress or despair. We remember especially those on our parish prayer list: [Insert names here, or pause for silent reflection]. Grant them your healing, your comfort, and your peace. Strengthen those who care for them, and may all who suffer know your presence and your strength.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We commend to your loving care all those who have died, especially those we have loved and lost. We give thanks for their lives and for the witness they bore to your love. May they be at rest in your eternal peace, and may we be sustained by the knowledge that they are with you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Faithful God, we have brought our petitions before you, trusting in your boundless love and power. May these prayers take root in our hearts and bear fruit in our lives. Help us to place our full confidence in you, knowing that you are our blessed hope and our sure defence, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

  • Heroes…

    Heroes…

In today’s lectionary (Common Worship and the Book of Common Prayer Thurs Aug 13 2020 at time of writing), one of the Saints celebrated on this day, happens to be Nurse Nightingale.  When I first learnt about her way back in school, almost another lifetime away, I remember wishing I could achieve as much as she did.  I remember learning about the dreadful Crimean War and the conditions that people where surviving in (or rather not at the time).  Learning of the impact her reforms had, not just then, but so many years to come afterwards.

She was, in her way, one of my many childhood heroes alongside the astronauts, Captain Scott and all of the other Antarctic adventures and a few others that I have since forgotten.

In many ways, we often fall short of our heroes because we place them on a pedestal so high that we make it virtually impossible for us to emulate them.  Of course, events in our lives often transpire in such a way as to take us in different directions, and sometimes it doesn’t.

The danger with placing our heroes on pedestals is that we put them out of reach, and we do that by ourselves, nobody else does it for us. We sometimes allow others to create the pedestals for us, but we are the ones who chose to use them.

But there is one person, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is not out of reach on a pedestal.  He is on a throne in Heaven and rather than being far from accessible He is listening to us all, interceding on our behalf, loving us, and encouraging us. He welcomes us with open arms and a warm heart, comforting us in our troubles and celebrating with us in success.  Jesus is within every single one of us, all we have to do is accept His love for us, and He will reside within our hearts forever.

Christ is not a hero out of reach on a pedestal of our own making, He is right beside us every day of our mortal lives, and every day of our immortal lives when He comes again to call upon us.

Jesus is more than a hero.

    He is everything.

“To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
Isaiah 40:25

    21 Do you not know?
        Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood since the earth was founded?
22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in.
23 He brings princes to naught
and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.
24 No sooner are they planted,
        no sooner are they sown,
no sooner do they take root in the ground,
than he blows on them and they wither,
and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.
25 “To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
        Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.

    Isaiah 40:21-26

I used to want to be more like my heroes.

Instead, I share my life with Jesus,

    and the weird thing is,

it’s a whole new level of complexity doing that, and yet so much simpler at the same time!

    God bless us all.
