The imagery of ‘beautiful upon the mountains’ speaks to the arduous journey taken by messengers in ancient times. Such journeys were often fraught with peril, making the arrival of a messenger, especially one bearing good news, a cause for immense celebration. The messenger’s feet, weary and perhaps bruised from the terrain, are described as beautiful because they represent the overcoming of distance and difficulty to bring tidings that transform the people’s reality.
This messenger proclaims ‘peace,’ a Hebrew word ‘shalom,’ which encompasses far more than the absence of conflict. It signifies wholeness, well-being, prosperity, and right relationships – a complete flourishing in every aspect of life.
