  • A prayer for cultivating love that rejoices with the truth 2026-10-19

Lord, you tell us that love “does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Sometimes, it’s so easy to get caught up in the drama of others’ misfortunes, or to find myself inwardly cheering when someone I dislike faces trouble. It’s a dark and selfish impulse, Lord, and I confess it grieves me. Help me to turn away from that instinct.

When I hear news of wrongdoing or suffering, my first reaction can be judgment or cynicism. But your love, Jesus, is always rooted in truth and points towards redemption. It doesn’t revel in destruction. Instead, it seeks what is good, what is real, and what ultimately honours you.

Lord, help me to cultivate that kind of love within my own heart. When I encounter situations that could tempt me to take pleasure in the negative, remind me of your truth. Give me the grace to seek understanding, to offer compassion, and to celebrate genuine goodness, however small. Help me to find my joy not in the downfall of others, but in the unfolding of your righteous purposes and the steadfastness of your truth in my life and in the lives of those around me.

Lord, help me to choose truth over gossip, compassion over judgment, and genuine rejoicing over schadenfreude. Amen.

  • A prayer for rejoicing in truth and opposing evil 2026-10-19

Loving God, you have shown us the way of love in your Son Jesus Christ, and called us to live by its truth. As we gather in your presence this day, open our hearts to your Word and empower us to embody the love that seeks truth and rejoices in it.

For the Church: We pray for all those who serve in your Church, especially for those who proclaim the Gospel and bring healing to your people. We give thanks for the example of Saint Luke the Evangelist, and pray that we, like him, may be faithful witnesses to your truth. Inspire all clergy and lay people to live lives of love and service, demonstrating your kingdom through compassionate action and unwavering truth. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the World and its Leaders: We pray for leaders in all spheres of life, that they may govern with integrity and a deep commitment to truth and justice. Grant wisdom to those who make decisions affecting global communities, that they may work for peace, equity, and the flourishing of all creation. May all nations rejoice in truth and turn away from deceit and corruption. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For Our Local Community: We pray for our parish and our local community. Bless our neighbours and our streets, that we may be a community where truth is spoken in love, and where all feel valued and supported. Strengthen the bonds of fellowship among us, and inspire us to reach out to those in need with genuine care and compassion. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For Those Who Suffer: We pray for all who are suffering, whether in body, mind, or spirit. Grant them solace, healing, and hope. Especially we remember those who have been wronged, deceived, or betrayed, that they may find peace and restoration. Sustain those who care for the sick and vulnerable, that their love may be a reflection of your own enduring truth. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the Departed: We commend to your eternal love all those who have died, especially those we remember with fondness and those whose lives were marked by a commitment to truth. May they be found in your perfect peace, where truth reigns eternally. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
