    It’s easy to get caught up in the dramas of life, to find ourselves drawn to sensational news, idle gossip, or even a subtle satisfaction when others falter. We live in a world that often seems to revel in negativity. But what if our affections were meant to be directed differently? What if the true measure of our love – and indeed, our spiritual maturity – lies not in what we avoid, but in what brings us genuine joy? The Apostle Paul, in his profound letter to the Corinthians, offers a counter-cultural perspective on love that challenges our assumptions and calls us to a higher standard.

    Rejoicing in Righteousness, Not Ruin

    The verse, "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth" (1 Corinthians 13:6, NIV), is a powerful declaration about the nature of godly love. It’s not a passive sentiment but an active orientation of the heart. True love, as described by Paul, recoils from wrongdoing; it finds no pleasure in sin, deception, or the misfortunes of others. Instead, it actively celebrates what is good, right, and true. This isn’t about ignoring reality or being overly optimistic, but about aligning our inner joy with God’s own character, who is Himself the embodiment of truth.

The Corinthian community had factions and misused spiritual gifts, creating disorder. Paul’s description of love serves as a plumb line to measure their behaviour. To not delight in evil means more than just tolerating it; it implies an active aversion, a refusal to find satisfaction in wrongdoing. This stands in stark contrast to many worldly values, where gossip or schadenfreude can often be prevalent.

    Conversely, to rejoice with the truth is to actively embrace what is good and righteous. In the Christian context, truth is not merely factual accuracy but encompasses God’s revealed will, His moral standards, and ultimately, Jesus Himself, who declared, "I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6, NIV). When we align our hearts with this truth, we find genuine joy not only in our own walk with God but also in seeing truth triumph over falsehood, integrity honoured, and His kingdom advance in the lives of others.

    A Call to Reorient Our Affections

    In our modern world, saturated with constant information and often sensationalised narratives, this verse is a vital challenge. Are we allowing our affections to be drawn to the destructive, the scandalous, or the negative? Or are we intentionally cultivating a joy rooted in God’s goodness and truth? This calls for a conscious choice to focus our emotional energy on what is praiseworthy and life-affirming. It means celebrating when integrity wins the day, when forgiveness conquers bitterness, and when love builds up rather than tears down.

    By actively choosing to delight in truth – in God’s Word, in the character of Christ, and in living according to His ways – we reflect His unchanging nature. We become agents of His restorative power, contributing to a world that desperately needs His unwavering truth and His perfect love.
