  • A prayer for guiding children and all people on the right path 2026-10-12

Loving God, In this time of Ordinary Growth, we thank you for the steadfastness of your saints and the enduring truth of your Gospel. As we reflect on those who have faithfully followed your path, we pray that you would guide us, strengthen us, and inspire us to live lives that honour your name. As you call us, so equip us, and as you lead us, so give us courage.

For the Church throughout the world, especially for the Diocese of Central Busoga in the Province of Uganda; that by the grace of the Holy Spirit, they may be strengthened in their mission to spread the good news and to live out the Gospel with zeal and perseverance. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For all nations and their leaders, that wisdom and justice may guide their decisions, promoting peace, flourishing, and the well-being of all creation. We pray for a renewed commitment to protecting our planet, that its resources may be used responsibly for the benefit of generations to come. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For our local community, for all our neighbours, and for those who serve in public life; that we may build strong, compassionate relationships and work together for the common good, reflecting the love of Christ in all that we do. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For all who suffer, especially those in prison, those struggling with illness or addiction, and all who are marginalised or forgotten. We pray for comfort, healing, and restoration for those named on our parish list: [Insert names, or pause for silent reflection]. May they know God’s enduring love and support. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the departed, remembering those we love who have gone before us, and giving thanks for their lives and witness. May we too, be inspired by their faith to start children on the way they should go, so that even when they are old they will not turn from it. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful God, gather these prayers and petitions into the fullness of your love. Strengthen us to follow the examples of your saints, to serve your people with courage and compassion, and to live lives that bear witness to your kingdom. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

  • Laying Down Roots: The Enduring Power of Early Faith Formation

We all want to give the children in our lives the best possible start. But what does that truly mean, especially when it comes to their spiritual journey? It’s a question that resonates deeply, hinting at a desire to provide them with something lasting, something that will guide them through all of life’s seasons.

The Wisdom of Ages: A Foundation That Endures

The ancient wisdom found in Proverbs offers a profound insight into this very matter: "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." (NIV). This isn’t merely parental advice; it’s a timeless principle about the enduring impact of early spiritual foundations. It speaks to the deep formative power of consistent, godly instruction and, crucially, example.

    Intentionality in Discipleship

The Hebrew word for ‘start off’ or ‘dedicate’ carries a rich meaning of training, initiation, and even consecration. It suggests a deliberate and early commitment to shaping a child’s character and spiritual direction. This isn’t about enforcing rigid rules, but about introducing them to principles, values, and a relationship with God that will become their internal compass. The proverb anticipates that this foundational training, when rooted in God’s wisdom, will have a lasting effect, becoming an ingrained part of their identity and influencing their choices throughout their lives, even into old age.

    The ‘Way’ That Guides

What is this ‘way’ we are called to set children upon? It is the path of righteousness, wisdom, and obedience to God’s commands. It’s not just a set of rules, but a holistic life lived in covenant relationship with God. When these foundations are built upon biblical principles – the character of God, the truth of His Word, the importance of love, justice, and mercy – they form a robust framework for navigating life’s complexities. This internalised wisdom acts as a powerful anchor, providing stability and direction even when life’s storms rage.

    A Legacy of Faith

The promise of Proverbs 22:6 extends beyond biological parents. It applies to anyone nurturing or instructing younger generations – Sunday school teachers, youth group leaders, grandparents, or even older siblings. The principle remains: the earlier and more consistently sound guidance is provided, the more likely it is to become a lasting part of a person’s life. This calls us to be diligent in imparting godly wisdom, not through coercion, but through loving instruction, prayerful dependence on the Holy Spirit, and by living out the truth ourselves. This is about planting seeds of faith and righteousness early on, trusting the Lord to tend them throughout a lifetime and to bring them to fruition.

    Prayer for Wisdom and Grace

As we consider this profound truth, we can turn to God for help. We pray:

"Heavenly Father, we thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word. We pray that You would grant us the grace and discernment to guide the children in our lives, whether our own or those entrusted to our care, onto the path of righteousness. Help us to model a faith that is both deep and enduring, so that even as they grow old, they will remain steadfast in Your love and truth. May the foundations we lay be strong and Christ-centred, a testament to Your enduring faithfulness. Amen."

    Living Out the Truth

This ancient proverb serves as a vital reminder of our call to intentional spiritual formation. It prompts us to examine our own influence and to pray for wisdom and grace to impart a lasting legacy of faith.

Today, commit to one intentional act of spiritual guidance for a child in your life. This could be reading a Bible story together, having a faith-filled conversation, or simply praying with them.

What does it mean for you, today, to ‘start them off on the way they should go’?
